Nia
for Inspiration
Article
by Laura explaining how Nia inspires her to write.
Most
people exercise to lose weight, improve their cardiovascular health or
feel better. I exercise to write. Let me explain.
Over
two years ago, I discovered Nia— one of the fastest growing new fitness
movements today. I say new because I had never heard of it until my
sister, who is now a Nia white belt instructor, introduced me to it.
However, Nia is not new at all. In the United States it has been around
for twenty-five years already. In truth, the basis of some of its
techniques and principles is ancient.
The
first time I did Nia, which is done barefoot to soul-stirring music, I was
literally amazed. It was the best workout I had ever experienced!
Honestly.
I
still remember driving home after the class, with the blood flowing
smoothly through my veins, my mind still in awe and reflecting over
everything the workout had stirred in me. Although I suffer from
fibromyalgia, a condition that has improved since first diagnosed, I had
no difficulty following and doing the Nia workout. My mind was so engaged
I forgot I was exercising! Shortly after that class, I picked up writing
my novel where I had left off nine years ago. Today, it is a published
book. Nia inspired me to write again.
What
I discovered that day, and through subsequent classes, is that Nia is for
me the perfect exercise for the following 7 reasons:
1.
Physical health benefits Unlike other fitness programs, I can easily
do Nia, even when I’m in pain. I can go at my rhythm and still reap the
benefits of feeling better because my body is moving, and I am sweating.
My heart is pumping, and I sleep more soundly at night —an amazing bonus
for a fibromyalgia sufferer. This all contributes to getting my creative
juices flowing.
2.
Emotional benefits Nia allows me to vent out my fears, frustrations,
anxieties, sadness and anger through various forms of movements. I always
feel calm after a workout. My outlook is more positive. I am happy. I can
pen these feelings more easily once I have dealt with them.
3.
Inspirational and motivating I experience great moments of creative energy
after I do Nia. The ideas invade my mind faster than I could write them
down. I am so inspired, and this feeling is accompanied by the realization
that I can accomplish anything my mind sets out to do. This motivation has
allowed me to write my novel, launch an award-winning Web site for new
writers and plan life-altering events. As a mother, it has made me
appreciate the spontaneity and creativity of my own young children.
4.
Nia allows me to experience various movement forms in one class As
part of the same Nia class, I could be kicking high and powerful and then
floating across the class like a ballerina. This satisfies my need for
diversity in fitness.
5.
Rids me of inhibitions In a Nia class, I can experience the childlike
movements of my youth once again. If I feel like skipping about during the
freestyle part of the workout, (like I often see my son do) I can do it
freely! It feels great and no one cares because everyone else is doing his
or her own thing. This has contributed to a great feeling of self-worth—so
essential to mental and physical health. So essential to my writing.
6.
A great way to meet different folks The range of unique individuals I
have met in a Nia class is so varied. From singers, musicians, and
teachers to photographers, entrepreneurs and actors, my life has been
enriched. And what a storehouse of ideas I get!
7.
It’s addictive! Once I experienced Nia, I wanted to do it over and over
again. And for me, liking what I do, whether it’s to exercise or to
write, is essential for getting motivated, especially since the pain and
fatigue brought on by the fibromyalgia can be so hard to fight. When I do
Nia, I am taking care of my mental, physical and emotional needs. I thus
become a better writer. A happy writer. A successful writer.
Thanks
